Astonishing X-men: I like it a lot. Cassaday’s art is not quite as pretty as in Planetary, but that’s really me being critical. Character moments are both amusing and endearing. This makes me want to read more about Kitty – any recs? (even if it’s obvious Whedon is very much writing her as one of his, I’m a Joss fan and he makes enough references to her backstory that I can have an idea of her character when he’s not the one writing her.) I’m only up to #15, but if you want to spoil me about Emma’s part, please do. Oooh, Ms Frost, ooh.

New X-Men/Academy X: Yost brought on way too many deaths/depowerings/fridgings for me to really enjoy the title, I’m afraid. If I wanted to read depressing fics, I’d read depressing fics. It’s funny though, because when I started none of the characters really rang out to me, I found them all vaguely dislikable, but as they disappeared I was D: DDDDD:. I like what Yost is doing with Santo and Cessily. I’m both frustrated and relieved that the Really Horrible Upcoming Plot never came to pass. I’m by turns extremely unimpressed and awed with the series’ depiction of Emma (Oooh, Ms Frost, ooh. Yep, my being a fan of Emma Frost : done. I did not expect that.).

Academy X had many aspects I didn’t enjoy and many stupid ideas, but the characters got to me, for all that I think they’re entitled and vaguely obnoxious. New X-Men killed them or depowered them or fridged them or put them on a bus and then had the bus explode, while they still had stories in them and stories to be told about them. I haven’t finished the issues I have, but I’m not sure I will, as I’m bitter and apprehensive. And the treatment of depowered mutants post House of M makes me want to hurl something against a wall.

One aspect that is definitely getting in the way of my enjoyment of either part is that the team leaders aren’t chosen by the team. THIS IS SO STUPID.

Whedon does write a pretty cool Emma. :D

For Kitty, the only good thing for her outside of Astonishing I've read yet would be old Claremont stuff. (Joss writes her as one of his, and it's obviously he was a lot influenced by old X-Men in the first place, especially Kitty, in the way he ended up writing his own so XD)

Yeah, Yost & Kyle really didn't earn good will with all the children killing (and torturing x_x). Yet I can't help liking stuff from their run (the Illyana story! Julian & Laura's awkward relationship! Anole & Pixie getting to do things! Laura & Cessily's friendship!) They totally gave the Mean Ball to Emma, though x_x

I'm pretty much with you. That much death normally makes me dislike a comic, but the stories were good enough that I still like the run.

And they ended up fleshing out some of the most interesting NXM.
