Day Four: Favourite Family

Everybody laughs, another question?

I am not presenting the Batfamily, a group of people that comprises roughly 15 persons. I will, however, give the list of people I consider as Batfamily; so you can tell me who else I forget: Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, Steph, Damian, Babs, Cass, Helena, Jean-Paul, Alfred, Leslie, Selina, Sasha, Kate.

The first half is inarguable, I think; Leslie and Alfred are on the list because I don't think you need to wear a costume to be part of the family; Helena is canonically referred to as 'the least favorite daughter' on top of everything else; Jean-Paul, though not part of the close family, was there during No Man's Land and occasionally popped up afterwards; Catwoman just is part of the Batfamily, because that's what you get when you're a Gotham based vigilante who has Batman for a not-boyfriend and who's been known to French kiss Robins and ex-Robins and who flirts with both sides of the law; Kate's on the list because she wears the Bat; and Sasha is or was a Batfamily member because Bruce made her a not-Robin-at-all when he was all alone and since then Dick and she once bonded over memories of Bruce.

People I don't define as 'part of the Batfamily', though they can be family, and who are the Allies I generally think of (the 'allies' part you find on wedding announcements, 'relatives and allies'?): Jim Gordon, Dinah, Superman, Roy, the rest of the Arrow family. Maybe Superboy, and probably the rest of the original Titans, but since they aren't welcome in Gotham without special authorization, it's a bit different. (Bruce: is a bitch.)

I view the Arrows and the Bats as being very close (not in terms of how often they see one another), due to the multiplicity of bonds and common interests between them. With the exception of Damian, all the members of the core Batfamily have worked at one point or another with an Arrow.

Incidentally, I would read the hell out of a series that was just team-ups between Bats and Arrows. Or, you know, if I had more time I'd totally love to write that.

Here's the interaction table, by my count (please tell me if there's any I'm missing, I'm just putting one definite example, but it's in no way supposed to be the extensive list of Bats/Arrows team-ups):

She calls him uncle Dick. Thank you, Devin Grayson. Thank you, Judd Winick. Titans.	Does Cissie not deserve nice things? I think she does.
Jason	The GA arc where Jason decides to fuck up Star City and Ollie and Bruce are unamused.	Jason is supremely disappointed.	Teen Titans	:(	The GA confrontation of AWESOME.	Jason was there when Roy learned he had a daughter. It doesn't count, does it.
Tim			Do Teen Titans/Outsiders crossovers count? I'd like to say no.	Robin.	Teen Titans.		Young Justice. Obviously, since Cissie has since then basically stopped to exist.
Steph	Quiver. They were in the same room at the same time! It counts! But not really because I want them to work together and Ollie to be awesome and Steph to be amazing.	BoP!	Teen Titans. Tim was playing chaperone, but they did meet!	Robin	THIS IS MY UNAMUSED FACE, DC. WHY IS THIS SLOT EMPTY? :|		>:(
Damian							Man, Damian, you need to convince Dick to let you get out more.
Babs	BoP: thank god for flashbacks	BoP!	Arsenal mini-series. Roy flirts with Oracle. :3	:(	:(
Cass	JLE. There should've been more! I want to see Ollie be a good mentor to teenaged girls! And be very very impressed by Cass' skill!	Did they ever speak? They both used to hang out at the Clocktower! They must have met!	Maaaaan, Roy misses on all the good kind of interaction with the right Bats, doesn't he? Even the flirting with Babs wasn't face to face.	:(	Batgirl. Apparently she started out by kicking his ass.		:((((( Given why Cissie hung up her costume, I think their interactions would be interesting.
Helena		BoP!	Outsiders. :)				I WANT THIS. Can we bring back WWYJ as an Elseworld, DC? One where Huntress is a sort of not-mentor to Cissie?

In conclusion; now you know who my second favourite family is. Sorry, Lois.

Heh, Steph and Roy HAVE met. Once. And Steph and Connor have met on multiple occasions. Cass has met Connor as well. She knocked him out first time they met. >>;;

Steph+Roy met: Teen Titans v2 #17 (only meeting and Tim was there too)
Steph+Connor met: Robin #25 (which went to Robin #26)
Cass+Connor met: Batgirl v1 #30 (then Tim & Steph join them in Batgirl v1 #31-32)
Steph+Cissie: Steph was part of YJ for some of the final fights, in that big crowd? They could have talked? (EDIT: Nevermind, that was Bonnie pretending to be Cissie. Ah well.)

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the arc Dixon wrote in Batgirl. I repressed because I didn't like how he wrote the relationship between Steph and Cass.

I need to read more GA, and more, um, Bat things that are not just Tim-centric....

But yes. I agree with everything you said about the BatFamily, except that I WOULD count Jim Gordon as a member, and I.... don't know who Sasha is, at least not on four hours of sleep and seven cups of coffee.

Can I ask you why you'd count Jim as part of the BatFam? I personally don't because-- I'm not sure, maybe because he's the 'best friend'. I can buy Bruce and Dick, for instance, thinking of him as family, but not as part of the Batfamily. Maybe because Batman has no authority over him.

Sasha Bordeaux (http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Sasha_Bordeaux) was Bruce's bodyguard after No Man's Land and at the start of the Murderer storyline, and a Greg Rucka creation.

Of all of Bruce's romantic entanglements, she's one of my favourite, because she knows Bruce is Batman practically from the start, and one of the things I find interesting with Bruce is that all the people he cares about (with the exceptions of people who've known him since he was a child) have met him through Batman. In fact, she falls in love with Bruce because he's Batman.

She insists on 'doing her job' as his bodyguard when he's outside being Batman, though she's perfectly aware of the irony, and so Bruce gives her a domino mask and trains her. She's his not-Robin.

I need to read more GA, and more, um, Bat things that are not just Tim-centric...
