Day Three: Favourite Team
Here I am, hating the fact that I can't just give the same answer to Day 3 and 4. I can't, can I? Even though the Batfamily works together a lot?
Either Devin Grayson's Titans either Judd Winick's Outsiders. I'm not a BoP fan due to my intense dislike for Gail Simone's characterization, I don't know the previous Titans incarnation well enough, and I haven't read enough of Young Justice to be able to say I love the team. I'm a fan of the Kelly/Waid years on JLA, but not so much of the team itself, if that makes sense: I love the stories, but I don't have a sense that they're particularly close.
Grayson's Titans and Winick's Outsiders, otoh, definitely are.
I love that about the Outsiders; Roy and Dick created the team specifically to avoid falling into that trap, but the persons they chose developed ties strong enough to force them to admit they'd failed in their original goal. Anissa, Grace, Indigo, Rex... I adore these characters. I love the team even after OYL. Both teams (and books) are a delightful mix of humor and action. Both books focus in part on the love or social lives of the characters, but unlike some others (I totally mean Geoff Johns' Teen Titans), it's engaging, interesting, and doesn't read as completely forced or as a sudden and inexplicable rewriting of the characters. When a character acts in a manner unlike what they did previously, the justification reads as believable character development.
The Titans, by contrast, are much easier to explain: they were supposed to be a recreation of a family-team. They went dancing together. They had movie nights. They had Donna/Roy fumbling. They had that fantastic diner scene in the first issue.
Maybe a slight slight slight advantage for the Outsiders. ANISSA/GRACE. <- a mixed-race lesbian couple in my mainstream comics! that's more likely than you think.* INDIGO/REX. ROY/GRACE. ROY/HELENA/DICK TENSION. ONE TRUE TEAM. Oh and Ollie and Bruce occasionally being bitches and/or overprotective.
Special mention of the JLI gang as well: I haven't read a lot of them, and I don't think they'll ever be as dear to me as the teams previously mentioned (they don't have Roy or Dick and they don't have Grace/Anissa and they don't have Devin Grayson writing), but I like them a lot. I just doubt I'll ever have the same OH HONEYS kneejerk reaction to them.
*yes I know about Montoya. It's not one or the other, y'know?
