One True Pairing Ship: NaruSakuSasu.
Canon Ship: NaruSakuSasu, however platonic, convoluted and one-sided it is. TemaShika fits, y/n/GTFO? ...Shikaku/Yoshino if the previous are a big no.

I call Shikamaru/Temari canon. I mean, he compared her to his mother. If that isn't a sign of intentional subtext, I don't know what is.

Oh, somebody else who doesn't like Neji/Tenten? Yay. For me, that relationship just seems to easy, plus we don't really have any idea what her personality is like, and I dunno, shipping Neji with anyone besides Hinata is like, 'why give up the chance for the epic angst and drama?' What is your reasoning?

That's my reasoning behind TemaShika too.

Part of the reason I don't like NejiTen is that it follows the idea of a natural pattern of believed-to-be-swiftly-canon ship that apparently a decent portion of the fandom somehow received (to which I say, I was unaware eBay worked that way): in a team, there's a girl and a 'desirable' boy and another boy who is either fat or a dork or non-pretty. So yeah, that gives things like ShikaIno and NejiTen all in a row with no further justification.

Another reason I don't like NejiTen is that in part I, Tenten is clearly Neji's exposition tool; she's the one who gives convenient explanations to Neji's techniques, she's the one who helps him hone his skills, but you never get a clear image of her personality in those exchanges. By contrast, when she's with Lee she does have a personality: she groans and shakes her head when he shows interest in Sakura, she shakes him violently in the Forest, she watches him training with Gai with a huge grin on her face. I'm not a huge LeeTen shipper, but I find them loads more interesting and funnier than NejiTen.

The concept of NejiTen doesn't interest me: a stoic genius and his competent female teammate. ...sounds boring. I'd be much more given to shipping them if she put him back in his place once in a while.

And of course I agree with your statement re: NejiHina. The most important and interesting aspect of Neji's character, IMO, is his issues with the Hyuuga. (Also, he was totally undressing her in that arena. Until Part II, there was no clothing damage in the series, except for that one scene where Neji pulls Hinata's sleeve back.) And the most interesting part of Neji's issues with the Hyuuga is his issues with Hinata, so really why would you want to miss on that? Especially given Naruto's role in both their lives, the epicness is piling itself.

I like SuiKa, but so far I'm fighting the inevitable 'cause I don't like the idea I have AUTOMATIC SHIP-TYPES. Which I do: bickering is one of my automatic instaship button. But I'd like to see more of them before I really jump into it. One scene with them having a discussion where they're not trying to kill one another would seal the deal, really. (that one scene where Suigetsu was all 'I NO WUT U DID TO SASKE' was good.)

And for KakaSaku, well, I like it but not as a focus to fics. To me, shipping Sakura with someone else than Naruto+Sasuke means that she's grown up and she's free to leave them to their mutual obsession. So if she's with Kakashi that means that Naruto and Sasuke are still tearing into one another. (I'd love to read a fic like that, incidentally. Possibly from her PoV. But except ceresi's KakaSaku I haven't found any.) Or it means that she and Kakashi are together because Naruto and Sasuke are dead, but then it's more that they're having a foursome with two ghosts.

It's like the fanbrats see that the dork, fat, or non-pretty boy is usually way more interesting and better boyfriend material overall. (Let's put it this way, who would you rather date - Neji or Shikamaru, who's going to ignore you 3/4 of the time, or Lee or Chouji would would worship the ground you walk on?)

That is a DAMN good point. Neji and Hinata is one of my favorite dynamics to play around with, regardless of whether it's required or not, simply because there is so much history and trauma there. It's hard for me to get into other pairings for either of them, although I do kinda support Hinata/Naruto on the grounds that Hinata should get whatever she wants (although I think Neji would both challange her more and know how to support her against the rest of Hyuuga when she needs it.)

I know what you mean about wanting to avoid the insta-shipping. Suigetsu/Karin actually grew on my slow, once I got over the Karin: Poor Man's Sakura subtext Kishimoto was pushing and realized that she was a bitchy, amoral, warden who'd done her job quite well while wearing thigh-highs and hot pants. Plus, EVERY SINGLE THING Suigetsu says to Karin can be read as him having a crush and being pissy because she's into Sasuke.

That, right there, is why I ship Sakura with people other than Naruto and Sasuke. I know a lot of people are all about Team 7 OT3, but I have a hard time imagining Sakura being an equal partner in that - I just think of her getting side-lined and being second best like she was in Part 1.

Yeah, plus Neji and Shikamaru already have girls whom they, y'know, notice and react to.

Not to mention that Ino notices Chouji is a boy while she has yet to remark on Shikamaru's appearance.

Word on all the NejiHina. (To be frank, NaruHina bores me. It's always written as fluffy fluff and while there's nothing wrong with fluff, it's not fascinating enough to hold on its own for long.)

I see what you mean re:Sakura, but I can't see her getting side-lined again, because she and Naruto have worked so hard to get Sasuke back. In many ways Sakura is Naruto's strongest supporter, or even his best friend. There's something between them they don't have with Sasuke, even if that something is Sasuke and wanting him back. (It sounds like I'm defending NaruSaku here, but I'm not, not in a way many NaruSaku shippers would get behind, I think. icon keywords.) That, and Sasuke is pinged by power, and I'm sure he'd look at her differently once she punches him in the face.

Same here. While Sasuke is majorly emotionally stunted and Naruto is just obsessed, I agree that Sakura could form other bonds and still be there for her team without needing to sleep with them.

In many ways Sakura is Naruto's strongest supporter, or even his best friend.

I was actually going to mention that Naruto/Sakura is a pairing a could actually believe (and it's one of the few cases where I don't really ship a canon pairing but would be totally cool if it happened.) And I really wish more people played with the Naruto/Sakura friendship and showed them being BFFs together, which I think is pretty clear in Shippuuden.

While Sasuke is majorly emotionally stunted and Naruto is just obsessed, I agree that Sakura could form other bonds and still be there for her team without needing to sleep with them.

*nods* Agreed. And part of me really thinks it would be healthier for her - I just can't get over her sticking around Konoha while her boys run off to gain power (not that she wasn't gaining power as well, but for a girl that age to have the two people she spends the most time with vanish - that has got to hurt). I want her to have someone who's not going to leave her like that again. Oh, and I just want to make sure this isn't sounding like me picking at your OT3 - I'm just talking about how I see the Team 7 dynamic.
