ganked from, among others, [livejournal.com profile] askerian:

Comment with the name of a character from one of my fandoms. I will tell you three things that character received on his or her birthday and from who.

One Two words: Stockholm Syndrom.

Oh yeah, and the deal with their first anniversary is that he waited until after sex before springing up on her, 'btw it's totally been 365 days since the first time we fucked, just thought you might like to know :DDDDD', except, hum, probably not with these words.

Hmmm, but she's still disassociated enough from him to be disgusted and freaked out by him and the idea of having his child--I thought that typically Stockholm victims more or less submerge themselves into their captors/abusers...?

Kabuto, you and your lamentable sense of romance. *shakes head* And so not surprised he'd keep track of something like that.

*will comment on the lovely nejihina smut later--must go to sleep now. ;-;

In fact and as much as it shames me as a writer to admit to this... I dreadfully over-simplified the issue. As in, I knew I had only the vaguest idea of what was the KabuHina situation in this, but the words really really insisted upon being written. So yeah, that's one case where I've blatantly valued prettiness of words over meaning.

...Okay, I'll try to put into words how I was imagining it as I was writing (because I always need some sort of mental justification.)

I think Hinata is disgusted by herself more than anything - that she's never actually lost her sense of self enough to make everything morally conscionable. It was the case for their first anniversary; she was repulsed by herself because she had let herself live like this for one year without even counting the days (and probably it was then that she realized she hadn't seriously thought about running away in a long while).

For their second anniversary, she's repulseed by herself because the way she sees it when Kabuto asks is that he's asking. He thinks she could agree. He sees her as the sort of person who would maybe say yes. She doesn't think at all that he might just be asking that precisely to freak her out - which is what Orochimaru spots all at once, and that's the reason why he's laughing.

In my mind, this scene is very much like a familial dinner, except that it's all dysfunctional. Up until that point, Hinata has always seen herself as Kabuto's toy - as a victim. When he asks, she suddenly thinks that she is condoning her situation.

Also, Kabuto is mostly making fun of her here. I don't doubt he's interested in her reaction, but he doesn't actually mean the question one hundred percent. In spite of what Hinata is thinking at that moment, she has very little choice; and that's why Orochimaru is chuckling the most delightful part is to make the victim into the one responsible for what is happening to her.

Kabuto, you and your lamentable sense of romance.

>_> here it's less romance and more trying to drive the nice little Hyuuga girl mad and make her freak out - she's so cute when she does! (I think my Kabuto may be more of a bastard than yours.) But he's not lying when he tells her about the date, though. (It's more fun if it's true, I think he thinks.)

I have no idea (read: way too many theories to settle on just one explanation) what's up with the third anniversary. Kabuto got killed, or Hinata is back in Konoha, or he's just playing with her...

*snip lots of good reasoning*

Ah, poor Hinata. I could definitely see things going like that, since from what I've heard (not that it would likely make her feel any better) it's pretty normal to "settle" into a kind of life under circumstances like the above (and she's been with him long enough for that to be the case though I also presume running away isn't terribly feasible or would carry horrific consequences if she was caught). Unfortunately for her, Kabuto's poking at the one place that would do the most damage: I guess he was getting bored, eh?

>_> here it's less romance and more trying to drive the nice little Hyuuga girl mad and make her freak out - she's so cute when she does!

Hee, I was kidding on the romance part. :D Though I doubt he'd stay interested once he managed to drive her completely around the bend--unless he'd think that she'd be even cuter then...

(I think my Kabuto may be more of a bastard than yours.)

Ayup, looks like it. ;)

Not that my Kabuto has any qualms about torturing Hinata or mindfucking her either *eyes slide over slowly to still unfinished Muma chapter and the next several after it* but he doesn't want to break her utterly, because 1. for him, it would be too damn easy and crazy people have limited appeal for him--broken toys are useless and the games he plays with Hinata only work if she's sane--

2. he's surrounded by enough insanity--he can tell that Oro's sliding over the edge Sasuke, whut and it's only a matter of time before he comes apart completely, which does not make him happy--and he doesn't particularly want another lunatic on his hands (more work for him).

I will also say that the only part of the Kabumaru debacle that I didn't want to light on fire and throw out a 70-story window was the bit where (assuming that he wasn't lying through his teeth) Kabuto said how lonely and alienated he's always been. So there's that too.

But he's not lying when he tells her about the date, though. (It's more fun if it's true, I think he thinks.)

Honestly, I'm just surprised that he didn't give her the time down to the second. HE PROBABLY KNOWS IT TOO. ;)
