Title: 20 Complications About "the Easy Team"
Author: [livejournal.com profile] runespoor7
Group: Team 10 (Ino, Chouji, Shikamaru; implied TemaShika; a lot of Hokages)
Rating: G
Notes: First in the Triangles and Circles [livejournal.com profile] 20_truths series. Because Naruto comes in threes.

Three genin in a team. Generally two boys and a girl – due to the high mortality rate of ninja villages, girls are less pressured into becoming shinobi, but of course it's perfectly possible, it's always about balance. Two boys and a girl, the tried and true formula. Never all boys or all girls.

Three people in team, usually as puberty is lurking around the corner, that's a recipe for disaster and everybody knows it.

It's just that all the other solutions are even worse. Two people would be too weak, too easily unmade or destroyed; four people would lead to scissions in the group. Better stick to the triangle and wait for them to twist out of shape until they reach their own equilibrium, taut and brittle and always spinning on the bridge of disaster.

You have to make sure the disequilibrium is thought out, the Hokages know. You have to be forewarned, each team fitting an archetype, personalities carefully chosen to clash – running into each other again and again until they fit into some semblance of a shape.

1. Of course some teams are easier than others; it's not every year that you can find so obvious a solution as Team 10.

2. Ah, Asuma's Team 10, Sandaime and later Godaime will think.

3. Three people who'd known and liked each other since they were kids. Three people who argued and disagreed and, on the first day upon introducing themselves to their jounin-sensei, had answered the questions addressed to their partners – (4) how Shika's only ambition was to live long enough to see his grandchildren, (5) how Ino's greatest dislike was being twelve years old and stuck between two periods of her life, (6) how Chouji's favorite thing was eating the last mouthful and gloat.

7. For the longest time, Team 10 was the only team actually working as a team.

8. Asuma would have liked taking the credit for it, but the facts are that everything fell into place more or less instinctively for the InoShikaChou trio. A few times, during the first weeks, Asuma envied them, remembering all too well how awkward his own experience had been.

9. Of course Team 10 is by no means perfect and to speak the truth everyone dreaded the moment that beautiful harmony would implode, due to, well, puberty, mostly.

10. From the betting-pool perspective, the most obvious catastrophe would have been Shikamaru and Ino dating – for all sorts of reasons, the major ones being that both were twelve years old. And teammates. It would have changed the team's dynamic for the worse, as Chouji would have found himself isolated.

11. Somehow it didn't happen, and Team 10 worked out.

12. Now the Hokage has to occasionally pause and freak out for five good minutes about what the hell she's going to do when the alliance with Sand fails, as all alliances are wont to do, and a member of what she considers to be her most reliable team is torn between Konoha and (13) a Sand kunoichi – the sister to the freaking Kazekage. Tsunade then proceeds on hyperventilating before starting on her paperwork with renewed ardor to make the alliance work.

14. If she can leave the mess for her eventual successor to deal with, she crossly thinks, she'll die a happy woman.

15. Thankfully, she has (16) a pawn of choice in her alliance with Sand, though it's not one she plans on bringing to the Council if she can ever avoid it; Naruto is a Konoha ninja, and (17) the Kazekage is something of a fan of Naruto.

18. But that would make the Council only more suspicious, so she only uses the thought to reassure herself that no, the Kazekage has no interest in starting anything against Konoha.

19. But this is a problem for the Hokage, not for Team 10 – not yet, something whispers to her, not until Nara Shikamaru and the Sand jounin nonchalantly stop treating their relationship as a series of for-the-duration-of-the-stay-night-stands because it'll prove too troublesome in the long run.

20. But that's also not something that Tsunade wants to see, because she may be much more ruthless than every Hokage except maybe the Second, she's still a Hokage, and as such she cares about every person inhabiting the village, and not just about the temporal organization called Konoha, as she once described it to her teammates when she was even more bitter than usual. It all comes down to the fact that Team Ten is easy to care about, except for when it isn't.

I want to. I really, really want to, but first I need to write Team Gai's, which is Mightily Unhappy with what I've written so far and isn't on writing terms with me at all, and Team Seven itself is being elusive and bitchy.
