The major problem with present tense is that it just screams "angst", and, well, once you've read one angst fic (or ten, or a hundred, or...) you've really read them all. It's always about present tense.
*shrugs* Me, I love both reading and writing in present tense - if the fic calls for it, of course. There is a wonderful intensity and immediacy that it brings. It completely alters the pacing and timing of the story and helps create suspense.
I'm guessing I probably haven't read the angst fics you're talking about, though. *g* Anything can be done well, and anything can be done badly.
There's also the fact that I've been struggling a fic which apparently cannot make its mind which tense it wants to written in for a few months now.
Maybe it's that character sketches-like fics tend to be written in present tense?... And I've had bad experiences about the pseudo-intellectualism that is present tense. (Including in published fiction that I've had to read for school.)
Thanks for that (don't know if it's old). Hmm ... I'd like a Web site or perhaps some software that will, over time, correct my grammar and appropriately make today's complaints tomorrows records.
I'm saying that about present tense, but an awful lot of my kinda-long kinda-plotty fics are written in present tense - they're constantly trying to turn into character analysis ficlets of 1'000 words, so it explains the frustration.

I guess I'm an old-fashioned pre-Joycean gal.
