First Year

Ted sees her thrice before the school year even begins.

The first time, he's sitting with his parents and his sister at the terrace of Florescue, and she walks past them as an older girl who looks much like her talks excitedly about her first year. That's how he notices her, a tiny black-haired girl who's starting Hogwarts this autumn, just like him. Mum suggests he goes over and talks to her, and Ted can only answer with a Look that makes Liz snort in her lemonade and reach over to ruffle his hair, which he wordlessly endures. One does not simply stroll to an unknown girl in an unknown street. But he watches her go away, wishing he knew people his age in this strange new world, only snapping out of his trance when Liz steals the cherry on top of his ice cream, to inform her she's acting very immature for a nineteen-year old.

Then, during the train ride to Hogwarts, she enters the compartment he's in. She's accompanied by a Prefect of the House of Slytherin, who introduces her to the three Hufflepuffs and the two Gryffindors Ted shares the compartment with (he's glad the stern-looking witch, Professor McGonagall, came home to explain about the letter and how Hogwarts worked. Now he's merely confused rather than being dumbfounded.). Her name, he learns, is Andromeda Black. She smiles charmingly and says how do you do to everyone who returns the favour of saying their name. Ted doesn't, because it seems no-one noticed he was here and the Prefect and she have left the compartment before he could muster the courage to speak up, and have gone on to the next compartment. The other students say she has an older sister in Slytherin who is a real pest, but agree that the little girl looks nice and is way more polite.

She's one of the first to be called for the Sorting. Ted is waiting, his stomach doing back flips and lurching unpleasantly, and he concentrates on everything around him rather than having to face his growing panic. She sits on the stool and she looks very comfortable though her feet don't even touch the ground, and the Hat declares her to be a SLYTHERIN in a heartbeat, and the green table erupts into enthusiastic clapping, and she looks satisfied when she sits there, next to the older girl Ted's seen her with in Diagon Alley and whom he guesses is her sister.

Then he's Sorted himself, and the Hat actually talks to him, which makes sense in a magical sort of way when he thinks about it but is nevertheless quite disconcerting at first and practically makes him leap from the stool. But the Hat has the kind voice of Ted's favourite grandfather, doesn't make fun of him, and takes its time before shouting RAVENCLAW. He joins his table, and doesn't see her until their first Astronomy class.

He's seen her three times before school started, three times before she even saw him back, and he sees her a fourth time, black hair under the night sky on top of the Astronomy Tower, white skin under the stars. She smiles engagingly at one of his Housemates, who returns the smile and goes over to exchange a few words before the Professor asks for silence.

Andromeda likes being known.

And Slytherin is quite obviously the best House, as the House all Blacks have been a part of, but there are three quarters of the student body that aren't in it. They've been judged and found lacking, but it's no reason for her to pretend they can't recognise worthiness when faced with it. And they don't having anything better to do, do they, since both Bella and her are in Slytherin.

She likes being greeted by a Gryffindor in the corridor, being lent a novel by a Ravenclaw, being complimented on her necklace by a Hufflepuff. In the end, after a few months spent at Hogwarts, she knows everyone. Ted Tonks is the Ravenclaw boy with the shabby haircut, longish, wavy-ish, reddish-brown.

She doesn't have a lot of time for outsiders, though, what with being an ickle firstie and trying to keep up with the older years. Luckily Bellatrix is here, with her friends, Wilkes who is in third-year like Bella and whose devotion goes past simple friendliness, Rodolphus Lestrange in second year, whose brother is a Beater aged at least fifteen, and timid Avery who does his best work in Transfiguration, under McGonagall's stern scowl, when Andromeda herself impatiently waits for the lesson to end so they can go to Charms or Potions or History or Defence, all of which she enjoys more than Transfiguration. She spends all of her time with them, between classes and during evenings in the common room.

Yet, outside, Hogwarts is hers for the taking, so by the end of the school-year, Andromeda realises she knows the name of every one of her yearmates.

A lovely start to what looks to be an interesting story! Their perspectives are as distinct as their backgrounds. I love that he's fascinated by her from the beginning, but she barely notices him, and that she--future mother of a Metamorphmagus--hates Transfiguration. Hee!

Thank you - I'm glad their characterisations don't feel interchangeable or anything. But yeah, she's rather contrary, isn't she? ;)
