Question about the US school system/holidays

Americans on my flist, how long does the summer vacation typically last for students just out of high school before they start college in the fall?

I think the exact dates differ by state (it's been different in the two I've lived in) but it's usually almost three months - I used to get off in like the middle of June and go back the first or second week of September, give or take, when I lived in California. In Arizona, I would be released the last week of May and then go back the third week of August.

Is that the usual duration between the last year of high school and the first year of college, too? That's the one that worries me.

Depends on the school district and the college, so you've got a lot of flexibility (unless you have specific schools in mind, in which case the calendar will probably be available on their website). Anywhere from the end of May through the third week of June would be fine for the end of high school; for the beginning of college, mid-August is typical but some schools don't start until early September.

For me, high school ended on the second of June, and college started the day after Labor Day (so the first Tuesday of September.)

It varies depending on the region.

Public high schools in the Northeast let out middle of June, usually June 15-25. Private high schools usually let out the first week in June.

Public and private high schools in the Southeast usually let out between May 15-May 31, generally before Memorial Day.

No high school will end before the last of the scheduled Advanced Placement exams for the year, generally May 15.

Colleges, again, vary by region and what system the college uses. If your college is on the "quarter" system, you would begin towards the end of September. If your college is on the "semester" system, usually from the third week of August to the first Tuesday after Labor Day.
