Characters: Aqua, Master Eraqus

Summary: Master Eraqus instructs his students on Keyblade wielding.
Notes: mild possible spoilers for KH: Birth by Sleep.
They're going more slowly than Master Eraqus would like, because whenever they start on actual Keyblade-wielding, he has to interrupt himself to correct Aqua's stance.
Every time, she blinks at him like she needs a moment to realize what he's reproaching her with, confused before her eyes widen in realization. “I apologize, Master,” she says, and assumes a proper fighting stance again. On the side, Terra shakes his head minutely and tightens his grip on his Keyblade, readying himself again.
They circle one another, crouching in mirror images.
The next time, Master Eraqus always has to stop them and remind Aqua to hold herself like a fighter all over again.
“Why do you do this, Aqua,” he finally asks, throwing his arms to the sky. “Why do you shield your Keyblade with your body? You are attempting to attack your opponent, not protect him from your blows!”
He eyes her from between narrowed eyelids.
“Do you think your Keyblade that shaky, that you need to conceal it from the rigors of assault? You have no reason to; I know your heart is not so weak.”
Her shoulders twitch in a minute shrug. “I don't know, Master,” she says, helplessly. “It just-- it feels right.”
He considers his student's earnestness, for some seconds.
“Fine,” he finally concedes. “But try to stand less upright, the start of the fight would be more efficient if your form were less rigid. Bending forward allows you momentum; Terra, show her.”
In the end he lets this go, as well. Aqua enters a fight standing tree-tall, neither reed-supple nor bamboo-tense, with her Keyblade arm pointing behind her; it's a mark of Keyblade wielding that such idiosyncrasies should sometimes be accepted. The Keyblade is about the heart far more than the arm. If Aqua's heart tells her her fights should be entered this way, Master Eraqus doesn't intend to teach her to ignore it.
When Ventus joins their small community, he takes to idolizing Terra far more than Aqua. Looking at them, Eraqus sees two brothers.
But when it comes to the start of a duel, and in spite of Ven's abandon in combat, Eraqus is most reminded of Aqua. Ven too keeps his Keyblade behind him; like he was trying to protect the world from the damage it could do.

Date: 2010-10-10 09:30 am (UTC)He's a well-meaning but ultimately uncomprehending authority figure, but he's a Keyblade Master authority figure. The heart > other considerations in KH. Much drama would've presumably been avoided if he'd remembered it at the end of BBS.
