I'd recommend reading Planetary to get a feel for Cassaday. The writing is superb, too - Warren Ellis at his best, when the cynicism doesn't totally eclipse the sense of wonder, he has original characters to play with, and a setting he can get nicely meta in...
Ellis is probably my single favorite comics writer, but I loathe his runs on conventional superhero comics - he's far superior with original characters. When he wrote X-men, I had to take it off my pull list because of how off and out of character everyone's dialogue was.
